Aussie Twilight Mum’s Book Club – June
June’s Book of the Month is:
Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse has finally settled into a relationship with the Viking vampire Eric, and her errant brother Jason seems to have his life in order, too. But all the other people in Sookie’s life – Eric himself, her former lover Bill, her friend and boss Sam – are having family problems. Eric’s maker shows up with Eric’s ‘brother’ in tow and the ailing Bill can only be healed by a blood sibling. The furor raised by the coming out of the two-natured has yet to settle; some people are just not ready to sit down to dinner with a man who turns into a dog. And Sookie herself is still recovering from her last ordeal. She’s definitely improving, physically and mentally, but she’s always going to have some dark moments now. The werewolves tell her that there have been strange and ominous passers-by in the Stackhouse woods which are not exactly human. This book explores the family connections of all the main characters including Sookie, Jason, Eric, Bill and even Sam. Sookie especially becomes familiar with her fae relatives even though most of them are out of reach while Eric and Bill meet their vampire siblings. (Sourced from Wikipedia)

I have just finished reading Dead in the Family. As usual I loved it. I love all Charlaine Harris’ books! The only downside to this book is that it ends! I can’t get enough of this series! I also don’t understand why they chose the cover art that they have (my copy shows a photograph of the true blood cast including jessica and lafayette) which really has nothing to do with the current book. great cover art just not relevant! I much prefer the true blood cover art to the illustrated version shown above. the above arts just don’t do the books justice they aren’t modern or ‘dark’ enough to grab the target market I feel. apart from the cover art I love the books! the plot was interesting but the book just didn’t go on long enough. I read it ina few hours (I can never put a Charlaine Harris book down til it’s finished no matter the time of night – or morning in my case!). I can’t wait for the next one!
I started to read the Sookie Stackhouse Novels as I just finshed reading Twilight (again). I was hooked and just reading the story, so when I got Dead In The Family I just had to start reading right away. I’m a bit let down as it was a very short book. It also to me felt something was missing it didn’t have all the wow, pow, zam, pam in it maybe because it was short and it was trying to fit so much in a short book? So in the end I did like it but it was a little dissapointing to me not like the others.
I read this book in one day. It was a lot shorter than I would have liked and I felt it was filled with a bit too many ‘tangents’. It felt like there was too much going on. I wanted way more Sookie and Eric action. I feel like this was just a ‘filler’ of a book for the next installment.
I’m glad I’m a newcomer to the series and so wasn’t waiting long time for this to be released.
In my opinion, not the best book in the series (not the worst either though, mind you). I think the problem was too many things were brought into the story, and not all were resolved or dealt with in any way.
But, that said I did enjoy the main storyline of Ocella and Alexei, it was more the side storys with the Shreveport Weres, the fairies, and the lak of Sookie/Eric relationship that let the story down.
